Red Mill in Winter, 20" x 20", acrylic

This picturesque old mill in Chester, Vermont, is not far from Fletcher Farm School, where I teach in the summer. The building shape, color and site on the river make a terrific subject. I always want to find good winter subjects, and with the red to break up all that cold blue and white, this was a natural choice. This mill shows a small resemblance to the Montague Mill, home of my gallery of 14 years but now Sawmill River Arts, a cooperative. Two story wooden mills were common in the 19th century along New England rivers with good water flow and sharp changes in elevation. Price available upon request.

Chevy Apache, 20" x 20", acrylic

It's always fun to paint old trucks! This Chevy Apache sits below a mountain near Taos NM. I prefer the abandoned vehicles to all those slick restored ones at car shows - much more texture, color variety, historical nostalgia. Friends bring me photos of old cars & trucks all the time - and steam trains are a favorite too! Price available upon request. SOLD! IN 2013

"Mytoi Garden" is a recent acrylic, 36" x 24", of a large, luxurious and surprising garden on the island of Chappaquiddick off Martha's Vineyard. The azaleas and spring greens were very inspiring when I was there. It's worth the short ferry ride from Edgartown to the island just to see the ponds and Japanese-inspired design of Mytoi. Red Boat

Yes, I know - it's been a whole year since I put anything new here! But I haven't gone away. I head off next week to deliver this painting and its "mate" to my Martha's Vineyard gallery, Cousen Rose in Oak Bluffs. I feel like I'm always behind in getting new work ready for these destinations.
"Red Boat" may seem a little wild to you, with its strong pink sky and other intense colors, but doesn't Spring sometimes feel that way, after a long, brutal winter - rather intense? It sure was fun to paint it that way.

Sage & Symbol, 48" x48", acrylic on canvas

Subtle symbols important to Native people are inscribed in the paint of this large New Mexico landscape - because the land was first theirs. It is one of several large pieces made for my one person show at Envision Gallery in Taos, NM, "High Country Color."

Autumn Boardwalk, 24" x 48", acrylic

It was a mild December walk on a beach north of Boston that gave me the idea for this painting. It's actually longer than this cropped center image - 4 ft. long! It floats in a rounded edge natural wood frame. I love it. I'll never forget that day.

Plymouth Notch Snow, 16x20, acrylic on canvas

It isn't easy for me to paint in winter, but if I'm lucky, there will be a little sun and I can paint comfortably from inside my van. Plymouth Notch, VT, is a favorite painting place in any season, the site of the Calvin Coolidge historic home and village. Price available upon request.
